The Botanical Garden was founded in 1808 by king D. João VI, with the purpose to create a garden for acclimatization of plant species from other parts of the world. Until today it is one of the most iconic sites of Rio and a very important center of botanical research. The place holds about 7.200 species of plants, the Imperial Palm trees with it’s incredible height are the main attraction of the Garden. The area of 141 hectares shelter the most exotic flora from many parts of the Brazil, like the Vitoria Regia and the wild orchid from the Amazon Forest. The walk also permits you to see several threatened species of extinction, as the brazilwood.
